Drone race — X and Y to the rooftop

Drone X and Drone Y raced from the same depot to deliver packages to a rooftop pad. Both launched at 10:00 and did not change their speed throughout the flight. Drone X flew at a constant speed of 72 km/h. When it reached the rooftop at 10:15, Drone Y was 3 km from the rooftop. What was Drone Y's speed?

The pattern behind it: Same time, same distance

Two travellers spend the same time, or cover the same distance.

In this one. Because both drones flew for the same 0.25 h, subtracting Drone Y's remaining 3 km gap from Drone X's completed route gives Drone Y's distance directly.

How to spot it

Two travellers set off together or one chases another, with constant speeds and a question about who is ahead, when they meet, or how far apart they are.

Common mistake

Children divide the whole distance by the difference in speed instead of dividing the gap between the travellers, or compare distances covered over different lengths of time.
